The new trend of LCD backlight development

The LCD itself does not generate light. It relies on a backlight to illuminate its pixels, especially in high ambient light environments.

 

Most LCDs today use edge-lit backlights. Several white LEDs are installed behind one edge of the LCD screen, sending light into a complex arrangement of light guides, reflectors and diffusers. The LED backlight is usually driven by a pulse width modulation signal to control the screen brightness.

 

The active-matrix mini LED backlight, invented by LCD TV manufacturers, is moving down towards consumer and industrial LCD applications. In the structure of mini LED backlight display, mini LED serves as the backlight source and is arranged in an array to form different local dimming areas, making the LCD display above fully bright or completely dark to achieve high brightness and high contrast.

 

The use of mini LED as the backlight source of the LCD display has the advantages of high contrast, power saving, and thin profile. It can compete with OLED and shows obvious performance in LCD display applications.
